Stewart McMillan is and has principally been a practicing lawyer. While he has also been involved in other businesses in addition to public and community service, he has always been a practicing lawyer. Stew has been a name partner in a law firm for the last thirty years and has had offices in Larchmont and New Rochelle, New York, New York City, Greenwich and Stamford, Connecticut, and Florida at various times. For the past fifteen years, he has been a partner in McMillan, Constabile, Maker & Perone, LLP specializing in employment law, basically as it relates to people working on Wall Street. His practice in employment law is international in scope, and chances are good that if you have been hired or fired from a job on Wall Street, you probably know Stew's name.
After attending local schools, Mr. McMillan earned a B.S. degree from the College of the Holy Cross and graduated from Fordham Law School, LL.B/J.D., as well as from New York University Graduate Law School, LL.M.
Mr. McMillan began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney. He went into private practice at age 27 and one year later, at age 28, he became a judge in the Village of Larchmont, one of the youngest judges ever to sit in New York State. Stew had been active in student government in all of the schools he attended, and ultimately entered public service, where he served three terms as a Mamaroneck Town Councilman. In addition, Mr. McMillan has been appointed on occasions by the Supreme Court to serve as Acting District Attorney of Westchester County in instances where the District Attorney had a conflict or was otherwise disqualified.
Mr. McMillan also has been engaged in other businesses serving as a lawyer, advisor or board member. He has also been a principal in a real estate development firm. In this capacity, Stew, with partners, built homes and developed land. Among the projects he was involved in was developing forty-plus acres adjoining Winged Foot Golf Club, where Stew presently lives. Stew, with partners, also acquired a real estate brokerage firm which was an immediate success and was ultimately sold to Coldwell Banker, where his wife, Betty, continues to assist in running Coldwell Banker McMillan Severin as a broker. Betty is also an accomplished artist. She not only sells houses, but does pen and ink sketches of them.
Stew has served the community in many capacities. Apart from being a public servant, he was one of the founders of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Narcotics Guidance Council, the original lawyer for the Cancer Support Group, a Board Member of Sound Shore Medical Center since 1993 (involved in fund raising, chairing the Investment Committee and co-chairing the golf tournament), and has been a member of the volunteer fire department, various Catholic organizations and activities related to the Larchmont Junior Sport Programs, including a long career as a baseball and soccer coach.
Over the years, Stew's main interest has been spending time with his wife of forty years, Betty, to whom he attributes whatever success he may have achieved. Stew and Betty have dedicated themselves to raising their five sons. They hope they have instilled in them a desire to help others, coupled with an ambition to get the most out of the talents that God has given them.
Stew has had a lifelong interest in sports, which probably stems from his grandfather, James McMillan, a Scots immigrant and a semi-professional baseball player, who threw balls to him endlessly, and who encouraged him to participate in all sports. He played sports throughout high school, college and law school and was, during that time, the tennis pro at the New Rochelle Shore Club.
Stew continued to play tennis, winning tournaments at the Larchmont Yacht Club and in other locations locally, and ultiimately gravitated into golf at Winged Foot Golf Club, where he spent six years as a Board Member and Secretary of the Club. He won no golf tournaments and learned humility on the golf course. Stew lives in Larchmont. He still most enjoys spending time with his wife, Betty, and his five sons, three daughters-in-law and ten grandchildren.
